What Feeds Sunwapta Falls?

Sunwapta Falls is fed by the Sunwapta River, which originates high in the Columbia Icefield region of Jasper National Park. The primary source of this river is glacial meltwater-especially from the vast Athabasca Glacier, one of the most prominent glaciers in the Icefield. As the glacier melts during warmer months, water flows into melt streams and tributaries that converge into the Sunwapta River. This meltwater is laden with finely ground rock particles known as glacial silt, giving the river its distinctive turquoise or milky blue color during peak flow seasons.

The name "Sunwapta" comes from the Stoney Nakoda word meaning “turbulent river,” and it accurately reflects the river's nature as it gains volume and momentum from snowmelt, rainfall, and glacial runoff. As the river winds its way through subalpine forest, it remains cold and fast-moving, eventually narrowing dramatically just above the falls where it splits around a small island before plunging over the cliff. Because its flow is glacier-dependent, Sunwapta Falls experiences strong seasonal fluctuations-raging in late spring and summer, and diminishing in autumn and winter when the glacier is frozen.

The very power and beauty of Sunwapta Falls is inseparably tied to the ongoing melt of the Columbia Icefield, making it a striking and dynamic example of the glacial forces that shape the Canadian Rockies.
