Walk to View Lower Sunwapta Falls

Walking downstream from the Upper Falls along the designated trail toward Lower Sunwapta Falls unveils a quieter, more intimate side of the waterfall experience.

Walk to View Lower Sunwapta Falls

Walk to View Lower Sunwapta Falls

Walking downstream from the Upper Falls along the designated trail toward Lower Sunwapta Falls unveils a quieter, more intimate side of the waterfall experience. Just beyond the paved overlook and footbridge, a well-marked junction leads you on a gentle, forested path that descends gradually-about 70 m over roughly 1.3 km round‑trip.

The trail winds through subalpine pine and spruce, initially keeping a respectful distance from the river, but the constant roar of cascading water keeps you connected. After about 1 km, it drops closer to the gorge's edge. Here, sturdy railings guide you to several fenced viewpoints where you can gaze directly at the first of Lower Sunwapta Falls' three drops, each framed by steep, moss-covered limestone walls.

The river squeezes through narrow gorges and then plunges again into a deeper chasm, before finally tumbling into calmer, boulder-strewn rapids.

For the best vantage, adventurous hikers can carefully scramble a short distance below the final drop-though caution is advised, as the rocks can be wet and slippery. The trail ends where the sunlit river widens and calms, marking the end of the gorge. Then it's a gradual uphill return, which feels surprisingly easy after soaking in the canyon's drama.

Overall, expect to spend about 1 to 1.5 hours completing the 1.3 km loop-longer if you linger for photos and peaceful pauses. This walk provides an excellent contrast to the dramatic surge of the Upper Falls, delivering a more secluded, tiered cascade experience in a serene forest setting.

Lower Sunwapta Falls Highlights

1. Easy, family-friendly hike of ~1.3 km round-trip with ~70 m elevation change.
2. Multiple fenced viewpoints offering stunning canyon and waterfall perspectives.
3. Three distinct drops of Lower Sunwapta Falls, framed by narrow gorge walls.
4. Quiet, forested atmosphere with far fewer visitors than the main falls.
Requires cautious footwork in wet, rocky areas if you explore close to the final drop.

If you're looking to complement the thrill of the Upper Falls with a more tranquil, immersive waterfall trek, this downstream walk to Lower Sunwapta Falls is a rewarding extension.
