South Side of Sunwapta Falls

South Side of Sunwapta Falls

On the south side of Sunwapta Falls, just downstream from the main footbridge, a series of forested viewpoints line the canyon rim. These views offer a distinct, almost hidden perspective on the river's relentless descent. From here, you can look across the narrow gorge at the waterfall's backside, watching the glacial Sunwapta River carve its way through steep limestone walls and churn violently past rock outcrops.

Due to the elevated terrain and dense spruce-clad slopes, the south side feels more secluded and intimate compared to the upper viewing platform. As water crashes downstream into tight cascading sections, this vantage emphasizes the river's sculpting force, mist rising in swirling plumes that catch spears of sunlight filtering through the canopy. In late spring and early summer, when meltwater surges are strongest, the roar echoes powerfully, offering a full sensory immersion in the wild energy of the landscape.

A short trail - part of the route toward the Lower Falls, allows you to linger at multiple lookout points, each revealing subtle variations in flow, depth, and canyon orientation. Whether watching the emerald water foam past tight rock channels or admiring the way the gorge narrows further downstream, the south-side outlooks are a photographer's and nature-lover's delight—especially for those seeking a quieter, less busy setting than the main bridge.
