Lower Sunwapta Falls

Lower Sunwapta Falls

The Lower Sunwapta Falls are a quieter, more secluded counterpart to the dramatic upper falls, located about 1.3 kilometers downstream along a gently sloping forest trail. Unlike the thunderous plunge of the upper falls, the lower falls feature a series of smaller cascades and narrow chutes that wind their way through a steep-walled canyon carved by centuries of glacial runoff. The scenery here is intimate and rugged, with moss-covered rocks, dense spruce and pine trees, and the sound of rushing water echoing through the gorge. Wooden bridges and lookout points along the path provide elevated views into the chasm below, where the Sunwapta River churns and swirls in a series of powerful drops and pools. While fewer visitors venture this far, those who do are rewarded with a peaceful atmosphere and a deeper connection to the raw, erosive force of moving water in Jasper National Park.
