Views Walking Along Sunwapta Falls Trails

Walking along the Sunwapta Falls trail is a truly rewarding experience. The route begins from the parking area via a short paved path, leading quickly to a footbridge that spans the narrow limestone gorge of the Upper Falls. From this vantage point, you'll see the river splitting around a central tree-covered island before plunging over a jagged ledge into the canyon floor—a view that’s both dramatic and intimate.

For an even closer experience, take the trail down to fenced lookout points near the rim of the gorge. These spots bring you right to the brink of the cascade, where the roar of the water and mist-filled air is unforgettable.

If you're up for more, the well-marked Lower Falls loop heads downstream along a dirt path through serene pine forest. Expect a gentle downhill and then gradual uphill return, covering just over 1 km round-trip.

Here, multiple viewpoints allow glimpses of tiered cascades tumbling into another narrow gorge—an experience that feels remote and peaceful amid towering canyon walls.

Overall, this 3 km out-and-back stroll takes about 1-1.5 hours, weaving between big-water drama and tranquil forest vistas.

The trail is easy to moderate, with well-maintained surfaces, occasional exposed roots, and modest elevation changes—suitable for most visitors.
